U.S. Navy Commissions Latest Virginia-Class Submarine

Governor Phil Murphy and Navy officials lead the commissioning ceremony for USS New Jersey, a fast-attack submarine.

Recently, the Navy commissioned the Virginia-class fast-attack submarine, USS New Jersey (SSN 796), at Naval Weapons Station Earle in New Jersey. The ceremony featured remarks from New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, and Admiral William Houston. The USS New Jersey officially entered active service with the hoisting of the colors and commission pennant.

The USS New Jersey (SSN 796) is the third naval vessel named after the state and the fifth Block IV Virginia-class submarine. It is the first in its class to be designed with accommodations for both male and female crew members. The submarine was built under a partnership between General Dynamics Electric Boat and HII-Newport News Shipbuilding. Weighing 7,800 tons and measuring 377 feet, the USS New Jersey is nuclear-powered and designed for extended operation without refueling, reducing lifecycle costs.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For discernment for Secretary Del Toro as he oversees the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
  • For Secretary Austin and Pentagon officials as they manage the U.S. military and Defense Department.
